How do our tog ratings work?

You will notice on our website that our duvet sections have what is known as a ‘fluctuating’ tog equivalency, for example 4 – 7 togs or 8 – 14 togs. This is because tog ratings were created to denote the insulation factor of the duvet. Synthetic/hollowfibre fillings, as well as feather or down fillings, retain heat at a certain tog, but don’t tend to release heat if you become too hot, which is why they have a fixed tog rating. However, fillings such as wool and alpaca are masters at temperature regulating, which means they work with your core body temperature to help keep it balanced throughout the night. So, in addition to retaining heat when you need to be warm, it can also release heat if you need to cool down. This is what creates the ‘fluctuating’ tog. Our plant-based Botanic range is also able to temperature regulate, within a smaller fluctuating range.

Our Winter sections

So, with the above tog information in mind, we’ve put together our options for warmer weight sections and you’ll see these below. These include sections made with traceable 100% British wool, 100% British alpaca and Botanic, our plant-based range. However, if you have any questions, then please get in touch with the team and we’ll be happy to chat through your options.

British Wool Sections

We offer two weights that are suitable for Winter.

  • Extra Warm Winter Weight: This is a very substantial section, with an extra snuggly 900 grams of beautiful British wool per square metre. That’s three layers of wool, encased in our high-quality cotton casings. It comes with a 14+ tog equivalency and so is ideal for those who really feel the cold, or who live in the coldest parts of the UK – or prefer to dial down the thermostat in their bedroom.
  • Medium Weight: Suitable for Autumn through Winter and into Spring, this section has a fluctuating tog rating of 8 – 14 togs. It comes with 600 grams of British wool per square metre.

Benefits of wool: Breathable, temperature regulating, dust mite resistant.

This is part of our Limited Edition range, so please check with the team before ordering to ensure we have alpaca available.

Benefits of alpaca: Breathable, temperature regulating, dust mite resistant, lighter fibres that are still warm.

What if I am a ‘hot’ sleeper but my partner feels the cold?

If one of you is a ‘hot’ sleeper, even when it’s chilly, then you can still opt for one of our lighter weight (lower tog) sections for your side of the duvet, without worrying about your partner waking up and feeling too cold.

If your home is well insulated, you also might find a lighter weight section to be sufficient, even in the cooler months. Again, if you want to discuss your requirements, then please do get in touch.

  • British Wool Lightweight Section: This section has a fluctuating tog equivalency of 4 – 7 togs and comes with 300 grams of British wool per square metre. Although these are more commonly used during the warmer months, if you are experiencing hot flushes or have a very warm bedroom, this section is likely to be a good option for you.

Benefits of wool: Breathable, temperature regulating, dust mite resistant.

  • Botanic Lightweight Section: Made with two layers (400 grams per square metre) of our 100% plant-based fibres, our Botanic Lightweight section has a tog equivalency of 4 – 6 togs. This is suitable for well insulated and warm bedrooms during the colder months as well as being suitable for the summer.

Benefits of ‘Botanic’: wool alternative, 100% plant-based fibres, moisture wicking, dust mite resistant, suitable for vegans.

What is the best bedlinen to use with my new duvet?

As our fillings are breathable, it is important to use duvet covers and sheets that work with your new duvet to allow its temperature regulating properties to be of benefit to you. We would therefore recommend that you use bedlinen that is made with 100% cotton or 100% linen and avoid anything that is made with polycotton blends as these will impact on your duvet’s ability to temperature regulate.
