How to Choose the Best Summer Duvet: A Comprehensive Guide

The THREE Duvets unique shared duvet solution allows each of you to have the duvet you need for the best night’s sleep, whatever the time of year. This is because each duvet is made up from two half sections joined together side by side, to create the perfect duvet for you to share. It’s as simple as one…two…THREE.

Many of our customers start with two sections, each choosing their own section with their preferred filling and tog - and then purchase sections later, to ‘mix and match’ throughout the seasons. Something we often get asked is which sections are best for the warmest months of the year. So, we’ve put some information below, and hope this will help guide you.

Whichever you choose, each section is individually handcrafted by our team of professional seamstresses in our workshops on the edge of Dartmoor. All our products are crafted with materials that are responsibly sourced, so are natural, sustainable, and chemical free.

What Makes a Good Summer Duvet?

Choosing the best summer duvet for your needs is not as simple as picking one at random. Several factors come into play, such as material, tog rating, and size. A good summer duvet should be lightweight, breathable, and have a lower tog rating to ensure you stay cool during those hot summer nights.

Summer Duvet Materials

When it comes to the best material for a duvet to keep cool, natural fillings are a top choice. Natural fibres such as , wool, and alpaca are breathable and excel at moisture wicking, helping to regulate body temperature and keep you cool throughout the night.

Wool duvets, in particular, are naturally temperature regulating and can be a great choice for summer bedding. Besides temperature regulating, wool is also naturally resistant to dust mites, making wool duvets a great option for those suffering from dust mite allergy.

For those seeking alternative natural duvet fillings, botanic duvet materials are an excellent choice. These include innovative fillings derived from sustainable plant sources, offering a luxurious and comfortable sleep experience. Botanic duvets are breathable and lightweight, making them excellent summer duvets for those hot nights.

Understanding the Tog Rating

A crucial aspect to consider when looking for the best summer duvet is the tog rating. The tog rating of a duvet determines its warmth. The lower the tog rating, the cooler the duvet feels. So, for summer, a lightweight duvet with a low tog rating is ideal.

A 4.5 tog duvet is often considered the best thickness for summer. A tog rating of 4.5 is lightweight enough to keep you cool, but also provides a comfortable covering, so you don't feel like you're sleeping with just a sheet. For the warmest nights, you might even want to consider a low tog duvet with a rating of 2.5 togs.

Summer Duvet Sizes

Duvets come in various sizes, including single, double, king, and super king sizes. Your duvet size should match your bed size to ensure proper coverage and maximum comfort. If you share your bed with a partner, you might want to consider separate duvets or an all seasons duvet that offers flexibility.

Our Recommendations

Now that you have an understanding of what makes a good summer duvet, let's dive into our recommended options.

  British Wool Duvet Section

Our lightweight British wool sections are filled with 300 grams per square metre of beautiful 100% British wool, encased in 100% cotton. Breathable, temperature regulating and dust mite resistant, this option has a tog equivalency of 4 – 7 togs. This means that it will provide warmth up to 7 togs but can also release heat down to approximately 4 togs if you need to be a bit cooler. Some of our customers use this  option for their section all year round if they still have a very warm bedroom in the cooler months and they tend to ‘sleep hot’.

When considering the best summer duvets, wool truly stands out as an incredible material for a multitude of reasons. For starters, wool's unique properties make it an excellent choice for those looking to stay cool and dry during those warm summer months. Unlike synthetic fillings, wool has an innate ability to absorb moisture from the body and then release it into the air. This keeps you dry and comfortable, allowing for a more restful night's sleep.

Additionally, wool is a natural insulator, which can actually keep you cooler in the summer months. This might seem counter-intuitive, especially when you compare it to materials like goose feather duvets or a down duvet. However, wool's unique structure allows for air to circulate freely, maintaining a comfortable body temperature throughout the night. This feature makes wool duvets an ideal choice for those who find that synthetic or down duvets cause them to overheat. Furthermore, wool is naturally hypoallergenic, providing additional comfort to those who may suffer from allergies. So, when it comes to finding the best summer duvet, a wool duvet ticks all the right boxes.

British Alpaca Sections

Crafted with 100% British alpaca wool, our lightweight alpaca sections are filled with 200 grams per square metre of luxurious alpaca, with a 100% cotton casing. Slightly lighter and thinner than our British wool sections, alpaca is also breathable, temperature regulating and dust mite resistant. The tog equivalency for these sections is 3 – 6 togs, working on the same fluctuation principles as our wool sections.

If your partner still feels the cold in the summer, then they could opt for our medium weight British alpaca section, with its 7 – 10 tog equivalency and 400 grams per square metre of alpaca. This section would also be suitable for the cooler months if one of you needs something a little bit lighter than a higher tog winter duvet.

Furthermore, on the occasion of a particularly hot night, our lightweight alpaca sections prove to be an absolute godsend. With the unique ability to facilitate optimal ventilation and regulate temperature, these lightweight duvets ensure you stay cool and comfortable, regardless of how warm the night becomes. This is especially beneficial during balmy summer nights when the temperature stays high even after the sun has set.

What's more, with our British Alpaca sections, you and your partner can say goodbye to duvet disagreements. If your partner has a tendency to feel cooler, they can simply opt for our medium weight British alpaca section. With a higher tog equivalency of 7 – 10 togs and 400 grams per square metre of alpaca, this section provides a bit more warmth, making it suitable for those cooler nights or if your partner simply prefers a warmer duvet. This tailored approach ensures both of you get a restful night's sleep, tailored to your individual preferences.

Botanic Lightweight Summer Duvet Section

Botanic is our 100% plant-based alternative, made with fibres containing TENCEL™Lyocell, from FSC certified forests and encased in 100% cotton. Moisture wicking, breathable and dust mite resistant, this comes in three choices.

Our Ultralight Botanic sections are our lowest in terms of tog factor, with 200 grams per square metre of Botanic fibres and offering a 2 – 4 tog equivalent. Suitable for the warmest nights, they could also be used in Spring and Autumn in a well-insulated bedroom if you are a naturally ‘hot’ sleeper.

If one of you needs just a little more warmth during the summer, then the Lightweight Botanic section might be more suitable. This comes with 400 grams per square metre of Botanic fibres and has a 4 – 6 tog equivalency.

Finally, our medium weight Botanic sections come with 600 grams per square metre of Botanic filling and offer a tog equivalency of 6 – 8 togs. This would be suitable if one of you still needs a little bit of warmth during the summer months or needs something a little cooler in a well-insulated bedroom when the temperature drops a little.
